Local kids with learning disabilities are being given an extra helping hand thanks to the launch of a new Caboolture Health Care Alliance which will see the hospital, GP Super Clinic and local organisations working together.

Caboolture Hospital Executive Director Dr Lance Le Ray said it takes a village to raise a child and that’s what the alliance is what it’s all about.

“The care we provide to patients and their children doesn’t need to stop when they leave our hospital. By joining forces with our partners in the community, we are able to help them when they’re home,” Dr Le Ray said.

“Already, we’ve been able to support 26 families through this unique partnership, and offer them regular and ongoing care.

“For parents who have children who suffer an intellectual disability, have behavioural problems or development delays, we can now offer them more support than ever before.”

The inaugural Charter of Support was signed by nine local organisations including Caboolture Hospital, the GP Super Clinic, local primary care providers and community groups today.

Dr Le Ray said the alliance will also focus on improving cultural and community involvement in health care services planning, community-based maternity care, and new training partnerships for students.

“We’re having great success already with 16 high school students from Caboolture State High School and St Columban’s College working towards their Certificate II in Health Support.

“It really is an exciting time and we look forward to seeing this alliance grow with the community.”

Other members of the Alliance include the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Local Community Health Forum, Brisbane North PHN, Jinibara State School, the UQ Centre for Business and Economics of Health, and TAFE Queensland Brisbane.
