The Paediatric Unit cares for more than 4000 children and infants each year under the age of 16. Our specialist team provide high quality care for your child in a safe and caring environment.

  • Acute care for children in hospital
    • chest infection and pneumonia
    • severe asthma
    • viral infection
    • vomiting and diarrhoea
    • epilepsy and seizures
    • serious infections
    • diabetes.
  • Infant illnesses
    • breathing difficulties or infections
    • croup
    • jaundice
    • severe feeding difficulties.
  • Surgical patients
    • dental procedures
    • emergency surgery such as appendectomy or abscess drainage.
  • Children’s Emergency Service and separate Children’s Emergency Short Stay Ward.
  • Children’s specialist outpatients clinics  providing care for children with:
    • medical conditions
    • special needs/disabilities
    • chronic disease
    • complex behavioural problems
    • developmental delays.
  • Special Care Nursery for sick or premature newborn infants

  • Ear, nose and throat surgery which is linked through the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital

How to access this service

Outpatient services needs a referral letter from your GP or medical practitioner.  Your doctor will need to send your referral letter to the hospital. Inpatient services can be accessed after admission to emergency services. 

If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.

If you need surgery, you will be placed on a surgical waiting list after being seen in clinic. You may also need to attend the Pre-admission Clinic prior to your surgery.

What to bring

Each time you visit us
  • Your child’s Medicare card
  • Private health insurance card (if you want to use it)
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • Current medications your child is taking (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
  • Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
  • Glasses, hearing and mobility aids
  • Your child’s appointment letter
  • Any special items listed on your child’s letter
  • Any documents from school or previous GP or specialist appointments
  • Your baby’s Red Book (Personal Child Health Record)
  • Snacks, a drink or money to buy refreshments
  • Something to read or do while you wait
  • a responsible adult carer to stay with your child until you can take them home
  • Advance Healthcare Directive if you have one
  • Your child’s pyjamas, socks or comfortable day clothes and shoes
  • Toiletries (nappies, toothpaste, toothbrush)
  • A comfort item like a toy or blanket
  • Books or favourite activity
  • Your clothes and toiletries if you are staying overnight with your child
  • Slippers and shoes (low heel, closed-in, non-slip, adjustable and firm fitting around the foot)
  • Something to read or do during your stay
  • Medical devices required for your child’s care (e.g. CPAP machine)
  • Do not bring large amounts of cash or valuables such as jewellery, watches or other items of value to you
