Visitor information

We welcome family and friends of patients who wish to visit. The main entrance and the Emergency Department entrance are both off Kropp Street and the hospital car park. Additional parking is available on the street.

Visiting hours and wards

Visiting hours are between daily 10.00am and 8.00pm. We do request a rest period for visitors between 1.00-3.00pm.

If you need to visit or stay outside of these hours, or if a patient needs or wants extra rest time, please speak with the Nurse Unit Manager who will help find a solution that is in the best interest of each patient.  As a visitor, we ask you to always remember to keep noise to a minimum. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Toilets

Toilets and disabled toilets are available. Please ask our staff for directions.

Bringing food for patients

We understand some patients prefer their own food. Please note we do not take responsibility for food that is brought in by visitors for patients. A fridge is available near the ward to store food. We ask visitors who wish to bring food for patients to choose low risk food and check with staff before giving it to their friend/relative. Due to their health condition, some patients may become very unwell if they eat the wrong food at the wrong time.

A coffee machine and soft drink vending machine are available for visitors and patients.

Your appointment (outpatients)

Your outpatient appointment is to see a specialist or clinician about your condition without being admitted into hospital. You may have an outpatient appointment before and/or after your admission to hospital.

Appropriate behaviour

We are committed to protecting the safety and wellbeing of our patients, visitors and staff. We promote a safe and comfortable environment where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.

We remind everyone that Queensland Health has a policy of zero tolerance to violence.  The following inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated:

• aggressive, abusive and threatening
• physical or verbal attacks
• obscene, racist, sexist or demeaning language

In circumstances when our staff respond to violence, they do so from a legal and ethical framework. You are encouraged to report all incidents including concerns regarding staff conduct.

Hand hygiene

Clean hands help prevent infection. To reduce the risk and spread of infections, we ask you, your visitors and staff to keep their hands clean.

It is okay to use the hand gel or the basins to clean hands. Please ask your family and friends not to visit if they are sick. Find out how you can protect yourself and your loved ones by hand washing for hygiene.

Smoke free hospital

Smoking is not permitted on the hospital grounds.

The Queensland Tobacco Laws ban smoking at hospitals and on campus grounds within 5 metres of its boundary.

If you are a patient who smokes and want to give up, we can help you with free Nicotine Replacement Therapy or alternatives. Please ask your clinical staff for advice on treatment or phone the anonymous and confidential QUITLINE service on 131 848.

We strongly advise that you do not leave the ward area to smoke. Leaving the ward is at your own risk and against the advice of your medical team. Hospital equipment must not be taken off hospital grounds. If you have an intravenous drip, under no circumstances are you to leave the building for the purpose of smoking.

In no event or circumstances shall Queensland Health be liable for any injury, harm or damages incurred by you choosing to exit the hospital buildings and/or grounds for the purposes of smoking.
