The 9th QLD Trauma Symposium is a multidisciplinary conference suited to healthcare professionals from a variety of specialities including Pre-Hospital/Retrieval Medicine, Emergency, Intensive Care, Surgical, Military/Disasters, Nursing, Allied Health and Research.

Local, national and international presenters and delegates involved in the various aspects of trauma care will converge to discuss, debate and educate on the dynamic specialty that is trauma care.

The QLD Trauma Symposium is an excellent opportunity for multidisciplinary trauma care providers to collaborate at a professional level, educate on current practices and discuss ideas for the future of trauma care.

Pre-symposium Workshops

Complex Trauma Care Workshop
Hosted by: RBWH Trauma Service

• Maximum 30 delegates
• A one day interactive course with a focus on the advanced concepts and their application in caring for the critically injured.
• Designed for senior RN/CN/CNC from Critical Care and Surgical specialities
• 8.30am-4.30pm (morning team, lunch and afternoon tea provided)

TREW – Trauma Radiology and Emergency Workshop

Facilitated by Dr Fran Williamson – Emergency Physician, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Emergency Department and Trauma Service and Dr Craig Hacking – Consultant Radiologist, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

• Current emergency trauma management principles presented as case based discussion incorporating radiological interpretation
• Small group, hands on procedural workshop
• Maximum: 24 delegates – Registrar/SMO Level
• 1/2 day workshop – 1.00pm–5.00pm (afternoon tea provided)

Trauma simulation debriefing – Conversations to connect teams and improve trauma care

Facilitated by Dr Victoria Brazil – Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Simulation, Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Bond University, Gold Coast Health.

• Designed for delegates with a leadership or educational role in trauma or other high performance teams. Attendees are encouraged to come as a group or pair from their facility.
• Maximum 20 delegates
• 3.5hr workshop – 8.00am–11.30am (morning tea provided)

Key focus areas:

• Using simulation as a tool for culture change and improving multi-team systems
• An update on ‘team science’ and how to apply to trauma care
• Using short clinical debriefs and mental rehearsal strategies for teams
• Cases studies from trauma systems and high performance around the world

Moulage Workshop

Facilitate by Clare Scott – Simulation Educator, Nursing/Midwifery Education and Research Unit, Gold Coast University Hospital.

• Teaches you how to create your own schkin, scars, rashes/Lups, graces/gravel rash, create first, second and third degree burns, bruises, bone fractures, lacerations, blood clots and impaled objects.
• Provides take home basic Moulage kit containing schkin to mould wounds, 1 FX Bruise Wheel, 1 FX Death Wheel, 1 FX Burns wheel, 1 white base grease paint, charcoal, Rigid collodian, 1 Mehron fake blood, 1 bottle of splatter blood, 1 Latex pot, gelatin blood, gelatin Blister, gelatin skin, rubber glass , paint brushes, stipple sponge and Tongue depressor/toothpicks
• Maximum 12 participants
• 8.00am-11.30am (morning tea provided)

QLD Trauma Symposium

The Symposium will consist of keynote lectures, feature presentations and two concurrent streams that will include  a combination of presentations/panel discussions and debates concerning real situations confronted by those who care for trauma patients. Discussions will examine each phase of patient care from multidisciplinary and system perspectives and ample opportunity will be given for questions about various areas of interest.
