How to prepare for your test

We will give you instructions on how to prepare for your procedure.

What happens during the procedure?

You will be seen by a radiologist (x-ray doctor) who will perform the procedure and a medical imaging staff member who will be there to support you at all times. This procedure may take between 1 and 4 hours. The following may occur during your procedure:

1. A fine needle (IV cannula) may be inserted into a vein in your arm in case you require medication during the procedure.
2. The radiologist will inject local anaesthetic into the skin. A needle and catheter are inserted into the vein in your groin; sometimes your arm may be used. Once the catheter is in place the needle is removed.
3. The catheter is guided through the main blood vessels in your body until it reaches the area to be studied. You should not be able to feel the catheter inside your body.
4. X-ray pictures are taken while the Contrast is injected into your arteries.
5. Once all the x-ray pictures have been taken, the catheter will be removed. Firm pressure will be put over the area where the catheter went into your skin (puncture site). This allows the artery to seal over so you will not bleed.

What happens after the procedure?

The recovery time after the procedure varies between 3 and 6 hours. You will need to lie flat and keep your leg (or arm) still and straight. Moving too soon after this procedure may cause bleeding at the puncture site.

The IV cannula will be removed after you have fully recovered. If you are booked as a day procedure patient, you will be given instructions on how to care for yourself over coming days. Staff will talk to you about what activities you can or shouldn’t do for up to 5 days. Follow these instructions carefully.

Safety

Some procedures may require an anaesthetic, which will affect your judgement for about 24 hours.

For your own safety:

• do not drive any type of car, bike or other vehicle.
• do not operate machinery or use sharp cooking utensils.
• do not make important decisions or sign a legal document.
• do not drink alcohol, take other mind-altering substances or smoke. These may react with the anaesthetic.
• have an adult with you on the first night after your procedure.

Go to your nearest Emergency Department or GP if you become unwell or have:

• a cool or cold limb
• slurred speech, balance problems or trouble using your arm or leg
• pain unrelieved by simple pain killers
• continuous bleeding or swelling at the puncture site
• redness or inflammation at the puncture site
• a fever
• other warning signs the doctor may have asked you to be aware of.

How to access this service

To access this service, your GP or medical practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the hospital.

If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.
