{"id":6778,"date":"2017-04-09T01:41:05","date_gmt":"2017-04-09T01:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/rbwh\/uncategorized\/improving-hospital-care-for-older-patients-2.html\/"},"modified":"2017-07-07T05:05:26","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T05:05:26","slug":"improving-hospital-care-for-older-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/rbwh\/news\/improving-hospital-care-for-older-patients","title":{"rendered":"Improving hospital care for older patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-padding-top:20px;--awb-padding-bottom:20px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-one\"><h1 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;\"><h1>Improving hospital care for older patients<\/h1><\/h1><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Leading researcher and physician Alison Mudge will share research and experience in improving outcomes for hospitalised elders at an international gerontology conference in July in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_161\" style=\"width: 395px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161\" class=\"wp-image-6782 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/improving-care.jpg\" alt=\"Group of female researchers\" width=\"385\" height=\"217\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Alison Mudge (back, centre) and CHERISH project associates Angela Byrnes, Adrienne Young and (front) Prue McRae, Elise Treleaven, Breony Kurtz, and Margaret Cahill<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Professor Mudge, Clinical Director Research and Education, Internal Medicine and Aged Care at RBWH, will present on \u2018Eat Walk Engage: Improving outcomes for hospitalised elders\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The EWE program supports ward teams to help their older patients to a faster and better recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Mudge said the program had delivered improved outcomes for acute care patients aged over 65 at RBWH including improved nutritional intake and mobility; reduced adverse events such as falls and pressure injuries and a reduction in time spent in hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge now is to sustain and grow the program and work towards a truly older person friendly hospital,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The research will be presented as part of the session on Advancing Hospital Care for Older Adults: Science, Policy and Practice From Four Global Partners.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mudge and her associates have also recently published their CHERISH research protocol in BMC Geriatrics.<\/p>\n<p>CHERISH (collaboration for hospitalised elders reducing the impact of stays in hospital) is evaluating the effectiveness and implementation strategy of Eat Walk Engage in a real-world setting.
