{"id":7590,"date":"2015-04-22T00:09:31","date_gmt":"2015-04-22T00:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/rbwh\/uncategorized\/wwi-health-workers-commemorated-film\/"},"modified":"2017-07-13T00:10:44","modified_gmt":"2017-07-13T00:10:44","slug":"wwi-health-workers-commemorated-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/rbwh\/news\/wwi-health-workers-commemorated-film","title":{"rendered":"WWI health workers commemorated on film"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>WWI health workers commemorated on film<\/h1>\n<div id=\"content_container_425396\">\n<div id=\"content_container_611734\">\n<p>The proud history of Queensland\u2019s doctors, nurses and support staff who served during the First World War is the subject of a unique documentary \u2019Bandages and Battlefields\u2019, launched today at the Royal Brisbane and Women\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Cameron Dick said the 42 minute documentary revealed the work, memories and legacy of Queenslanders who worked in terrible conditions in the medical service during the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conditions that confronted 1300 doctors and about 2500 nurses from the Australian Army Nursing Service in the First World War were appalling,\u201d Mr Dick said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInfection was rampant, and the only anaesthetics available were chloroform and ether.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite this, our medical personnel treated 137,000 Australian soldiers, as well as countless others from allied nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dick said the documentary was produced by the Department of Health as part of the Queensland Government\u2019s contribution to the ANZAC Centenary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a time for us to remember the medical personnel and support staff who put their lives on the line to treat thousands of Australians and our allied troops,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legacy of war has not just been the lessons about peace, but about saving lives and preventing death through disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA century on, many of the medical lessons learnt in just four years during the First World War are still being used and developed further in Queensland hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd our tradition of providing medical support continues, with around<\/p>\n<p>200 Queensland Health employees also serving as Australian Defence Force reservists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across Queensland, the documentary will be available to be shown at official ANZAC centenary ceremonies, and provided to all Hospital and Health Services.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Bandages and Battlefields\u2019 will be broadcast on Network Ten\u2019s Channel One on Anzac Day at 2pm.
