Early pregnancy assessment unit

On this page

The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) assists women experiencing possible miscarriage, early pregnancy loss or complications following a termination of pregnancy.

We understand this may be an overwhelming time for you and your family. We are here to offer our expertise, care and ongoing support.

    Conditions treated

    • Bleeding from the vagina and abdominal pain in the early weeks of a confirmed pregnancy
    • Miscarriage after an ultrasound
    • Molar pregnancy which has been confirmed following a curette
    • Suspected ectopic pregnancy. This is a pregnancy which is suspected to be outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube.

    How to access this service

If you experience severe, heavy vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain when you are less than 20 weeks pregnant, visit your closest Emergency Department (ED) or call Triple Zero (000).  We don’t require a doctor’s referral prior to your attendance to the hospital.

    Your appointment

Prior to your appointment, you will have an ultrasound and blood test to confirm symptoms are due to a miscarriage or another cause. During your first appointment your doctor will review your results with you. The first appointment may only be half an hour as it’s not always possible to come to a conclusion and further tests may be required.
