Meet our Cardio-thoracic Surgery Team

The Department of Cardio-thoracic Surgery at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) has 10 specialists who perform routine operations on a daily basis. These include elective and emergency coronary surgery, valve surgery and aortic dissection surgery. Our surgeons also sub-specialise in specific areas of their choice, enabling the unit to perform complex and rarer operations with exceptional results.

All our surgeons are actively involved in teaching and research, with affiliations and commitments to the University of Queensland, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, The Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons and various international associations.

Consultant surgeons

Dr Peter Tesar, Director, Cardio-thoracic Surgery Program

Dr Tesar graduated as a medical practitioner from the University of Melbourne in 1977. He obtained his fellowships in General Surgery and Cardio-thoracic Surgery with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1986 and 1988. Dr Tesar then went on to complete his training fellowships in Cardiac Surgery at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, USA, in 1989 and the Harefield Hospital, England, under Professor Magdi Yacoub in 1990.

Since November 1990, he has been a highly regarded consultant cardiac surgeon at TPCH, where he has evolved a wealth of experience performing over 10,000 open heart surgery procedures. He has authored or co-authored over 40 papers and made over 120 presentations at national and international hospitals and at cardiac surgical meetings.

Dr Tesar’s special interests include surgery of the thoracic aorta and complex aortic root and aortic surgery, surgical myectomy for HOCM, valvular heart surgery, redo cardiac surgery including in-complex clinical scenarios, heart failure and cardiac transplant surgery, perioperative care and the psychology of coaching the recovery from cardiac surgery.

Dr Morgan Windsor, Director Thoracic Surgery

Dr Windsor is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and also a Diplomate of Thoracic Surgery of the University of Strasbourg, France. He is the Director of Thoracic Surgery at both TPCH and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). Dr Windsor also chairs RBWH’s Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary team.

His practice involves assessment and treatment of all thoracic pathology with a focus on lung cancer management. Dr Windsor is also involved in research activities in early detection and treatment of lung cancer and database and quality in thoracic surgery.

Dr Jalali has been practicing at TPCH since 1997. He graduated from KUL Leuven, Belgium, in 1995 and obtained postdoctoral fellowships from ULG Belgium and University of Pennsylvania (USA) and London (UK). His special interests include minimally invasive valve surgery including mitral valve repairs, aortic valve and root repairs, adult congenital surgery and arrhythmia surgery.

Dr Clarke obtained his Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in 2004 following training in Brisbane and Sydney. He went on to complete a Postgraduate Fellowship in Congenital Cardio-thoracic Surgery at the Birmingham Hospital, England, in 2004. Dr Clarke joined TPCH in 2005 and is a specialist in transcatheter valve implantations, aortic valve surgery, mitral valve repairs, adult congenital surgery and complex valve surgery.

Dr Thomson practices general cardiac surgery with subspecialty interest in cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, heart failure surgery, pulmonary thrombo-endarterectomy and complex cardiac surgery.

Dr Wall is a graduate of the University of Queensland and obtained his Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in 2005. He also undertook a year of Fellowship at the Birmingham Hospital, UK, in Congenital Cardio-thoracic Surgery. Dr Wall joined TPCH in 2009 and has a keen subspecialty interest in lung transplantation, adult congenital surgery, complex and redo valvular surgery and minimally invasive valve surgery.

Dr Kang has been working at TPCH since 2013. Between 2006 and 2012, he worked at the Townsville Hospital. He trained in cardio-thoracic surgery at TPCH and The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and obtained his Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in 2005. Dr Kang has a special interest in aortic surgery, valve sparing aortic root replacement, surgical myectomy for HOCM, mitral valve repair, atrial fibrillation surgery and lung transplantation.

Dr Naidoo obtained his Fellowship of The College of Cardio-thoracic Surgeons in 2005 followed by a Master of Medicine in 2008 in South Africa. He moved to Australia and obtained his Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in the year 2010 and has been working at TPCH ever since. Dr Naidoo performs both cardiac and thoracic surgery, and his interests include minimally invasive lung cancer surgery, the management of mediastinal masses, lung transplantation and the management of pectus deformities. His cardiac surgical interests include rapid deployment aortic valve replacements, mitral valve repair and aortic surgery.

Dr Prabhu obtained his Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in 2014 and has been working at TPCH since then. He trained in Bangalore and has completed Congenital and Adult Fellowships in Australia and India. His specialty interests include heart failure and transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, off pump coronary surgery, adult congenital heart surgery, arrhythmia surgery and valve repairs.

Dr Williams joined TPCH in 2016 after completing a Fellowship at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne. This Fellowship included exposure to complex aortic surgery. She trained in cardio-thoracic surgery in Melbourne, Brisbane and Hobart and obtained her Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in 2015.

Dr William’s research interests include cardiac tissue engineering, having previously completed a Microsurgery Fellowship in this field at the O’Brien Institute, Melbourne. Her speciality interests include aortic surgery, lung transplantation and blood conservation strategies. She is a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland and is actively involved in trainee education through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
