Vascular Surgery
(veins and arteries)
Our Vascular Surgery Department provides specialised services for people who have problems with their veins and arteries. The department is a satellite service of the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital (RBWH) vascular department. We provide surgical services for northern Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and as far north as Rockhampton. We also receive tertiary referrals from throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Our services
We offer outpatient consultation and surgical services at two hospital sites including Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital (RBWH). We provide a full range of specialised diagnostic and surgical procedures. These include:
- diagnostic vascular ultrasound (scan to identify blockages and detect blood clots)
- diagnostic angiography (x-ray to look at the arteries)
- endovascular interventions (for peripheral vascular disease and aneurismal disease)
- carotid endarterectomy for carotid stenosis (narrowing of carotid arteries) and stroke prevention
- kidney failure treatment access for haemodialysis (dialysis)
- secondary risk factor prevention for patients with cardiovascular disease
- varicose veins and open venous surgery.
How to access this service
You need a referral letter from your GP or medical practitioner to access this service. Your doctor will need to send your referral letter to the hospital.
If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.
We always try to ensure that clinics run on time. Sometimes there are unavoidable delays and it can take between 1-2 hours to see one of our specialists. Should this occur please inform the clinic staff if you have any concerns (e.g. long distance travel and/or need to catch transport at a pre-arranged time).
If you want to refer your patient to the Professor Phillip Walker Vascular Laboratory, please fill out the Metro North Vascular Surgery referral form.
