Exciting year for mental health researchers

Metro North Mental Health’s third annual Research Review summarises the impressive research-related achievements of researchers and clinicians during 2015.

Highlights of Celebrating Research, include work by mental health researchers Professor Michael Breakspear, A/Professor James Scott and Dr Dylan Flaws whose world class work was recognised at the Inaugural Metro North Research Excellence Awards. It also celebrates the huge contribution of clinicians who go the extra mile to integrate research in practice.

A/Professor Brett Emmerson, Executive Director MNMH, said the work described spanned the spectrum from cutting edge neuroscience, through clinical trials to evaluation of programs and health services research.

While the phenomena of interest vary widely, studies are all designed to generate evidence to improve the health care and outcomes of people affected by mental illness.

The review also includes first person accounts of researchers and clinicians, highlighting the interconnectedness of research and practice.

Clinicians undertaking research describe both the challenges and rewards involved and emphasise the importance of support from the organisation, peers and family in enabling their research.
