The Kenneth G Jamieson Department of Neurosurgery is a world-class facility and is a major neurosurgical referral centre in Queensland. We provide comprehensive neurosurgical services for elective and emergency patients with neurological, spinal and peripheral nerve conditions. We perform around 1000 operations and provide outpatient services to over 4000 people each year.

- Cranial and spinal trauma
- Skull base conditions
- Hydrocephalus (build up of cerebrospinal fluid)

- Peripheral nerve.
How to access this service
To access this service, your GP or medical practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the hospital.
If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.

After your hospital appointment
Your doctor may advise that you require surgery. If this is the case you will be placed on a surgical waiting list and may need to attend the Pre-admission Clinic before your surgery.
What to bring
- Your Medicare card
- Private health insurance card (if you have one)
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Current medications (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
- Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
- Glasses, hearing and mobility aids
- Your appointment letter
- Any special items listed on your letter
- WorkCover claim number (if relevant)
- Snacks, a drink or money to buy refreshments
- Something to read or do while you wait
- An adult carer to support you and take you home
- Copy of Advanced Healthcare Directive or Enduring Power of Attorney (if you have one)
- A jacket or cardigan in case you get cold
- A dressing gown or cardigan, sleepwear or comfortable day clothes
- Slippers and shoes (low heel, closed-in, non-slip, adjustable and firm fitting around the foot)
- Your toiletries and personal items
- Copy of Advanced Healthcare Directive or Enduring Power of Attorney if you have one
- Something to read or do during your stay
- Medical devices required for your care (e.g. CPAP machine)
- Do not bring large amounts of cash or valuables such as jewellery, watches or other items of value to you

The Kenneth G Jamieson Neurosurgery Unit is a leading tertiary and subspecialty quaternary service, providing specialised surgery for inpatients and outpatients. We also provide community neurosurgical services to patients living in the Metro North catchment area and northern Queensland.
Services include
- A world-class cerebrovascular and interventional neuroradiology service.
- Neuro-oncology multidisciplinary team.
- Pituitary service and skull base team working in conjunction with subspecialist ENT surgeons.
- Epilepsy surgery is performed as part of the Queensland Comprehensive Epilepsy program.
- Surgical management of spinal conditions in collaboration with subspecialist spinal surgeons and the Orthopaedics department.
- Management of cranial and spinal pain is undertaken in conjunction with pain specialists.
We cover
- Cerebrovascular including both surgical and endovascular management of aneurysms and arteriovenous malformation.
- Brain tumours including surgical management of primary and secondary brain tumours. Fluorescence guided resection of gliomas and awake craniotomies.
- Basic and complex spinal surgery including acute or emergent degenerative spinal disease, spinal tumours and vascular malformations. Minimally invasive and stereotactic image guided spinal surgery.
- Skull base surgery including pituitary tumours and acoustic neuromas.
- Management of hydrocephalus including laparoscopic shunt insertion.
- Neuro-endoscopic procedures including third ventriculostomy and biopsies.
- Functional and pain surgery including management of trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm and glossopharyngeal neuralgia.
- Management of Chiari malformation and syringomyelia.
- Peripheral nerve surgery.
Our team
Our experienced staff specialist neurosurgeons are supported by accredited neurosurgical trainees and principal house officers. We have a 30 bed unit staffed by over 50 nursing staff including registered nurses, enrolled nurses and assistants in nursing. Acute medical staff including SMOs, RMOs and interns provide 24 hour care to patients on the ward. We also have physiotherapists, speech therapist, dieticians, occupational therapists, social workers and pharmacists. The team is supported by ancillary staff including patient service officers and receptionists.
