Research mentors

Mentoring is a highly valuable development activity implemented in an organisation. At the core of the activity is the relationship between the mentor and the mentee, where the development of the mentee is the key focus. Mentors are people that volunteer their time and expertise and are a resource the mentee is privileged to access. They are willing and able to pass on the benefits of their knowledge and experience. The relationship between a mentor and mentee is best set around a specific goal, where the mentor acts as a support and coach for the mentee to meet that goal.

Dr Gordon McGurkGordon is currently the chair of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), the UQ HREC ‘A’, and a member of the Townsville Hospital and Health Service HREC.

He holds a PhD in Genetics from the University of Edinburgh and is in the final semester of a Juris Doctor through the University of Southern Queensland. He is a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia and Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

As the Director of OmniAdvisory Consulting, Gordon consults in areas of health related to clinical trials (especially governance and strategy), research integrity, human and animal ethics, and corporate governance. Much of this expertise was gained while working at the National Health and Medical Research Council on projects related to improving clinical trials in Australia.

Fiona CoyerProfessor of Nursing, Joint appointment School of Nursing, QUT and Intensive Care Services/Nursing & Midwifery Research Centre, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital

Professor Fiona Coyer holds a joint appointment as Professor of Nursing with the School of Nursing, Queensland University of Technology and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Brisbane, Australia. She is based at the Intensive Care Services department, RBWH. Fiona has extensive experience as a leader in academic and research programs. In August 2012, she established the Intensive Care Nursing Professorial Unit at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital where she has developed a program of work focused on developing evidence-based approaches to nursing care and management of the skin integrity in the critically ill patient in intensive care. Fiona currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Wound Care and Intensive and Critical Care Nursing journal.

  • 2011: Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning for ‘Leadership in the teaching of intensive care nursing by developing innovative course-level curricula and resources in close collaboration with healthcare industry partners.

  • Wide publication range evidences significant mentorship and support of junior clinicians and acknowledges RBWH appointment and affiliation.
  • Scopus H-index of 17, with 845 citations from 86 publications (2003 onwards)
  • Google Scholar H-index of26, with 1,927 citations; of these 1,556 citations are from 2014 onwards.
  • In 2011, 2016, and 2017, co-authored the winning submissions of the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses Best Nursing Review paper. In 2011 and 2016, students were first authors.

Kevin Laupland

Director of Research, Intensive Care Services and Intensivist, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital
Professor, Faculty of Health QUT

Professor Laupland completed his MD (Honours) degree at the University of Toronto and subsequent training at the University of Calgary. He is fellowship certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Infectious Diseases and holds a Master of Science (Epidemiology) degree from the University of Calgary.

Professor Laupland has actively practiced both as an Intensivist and Infectious Diseases Consultant in Calgary (2002-2012) and then subsequent at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops where he held administrative positions including Head of the Department of Medicine and President of the Medical Staff.

Professor Laupland’s research program has involved investigation within a broad range of areas related to his clinical disciplines with a focus on the epidemiology of severe infections and those due to anti-microbial resistant pathogens. Research successes have been the product of extensive collaboration with colleagues in medical, surgical, laboratory, basic science, and allied health disciplines not only locally but internationally most notably with investigators in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Sweden, and The United Kingdom. He has authored more than 500 publications of which more than one half have been in major peer-reviewed journals.

He has been actively involved in mentoring the next generation of physicians and has supervised research trainees from the undergraduate through professional and post-graduate levels.

Professor Jeffrey LipmanAmbassador for Research RBWH/Consultant Intensive Care services

Professor Lipman is a Senior Consultant Specialist in the Intensive Care at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and also Head of the Discipline of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care for The University of Queensland’s medical program. He is site Principal Investigator for numerous multi-national and international trials. Research interests include all aspects of management in intensive care, resuscitation of burns and particularly pharmacokinetics of antibiotic dosage. His research into antibiotic usage in acute situations has received international recognition whilst he has received multiple national and international awards. Professor Lipman is involved in most research projects, oversees the direction of the research centre, mentors staff and supervises postgraduate students.
