Our Paediatric Service cares for and treats children, from newborns up to the age of 16 years, for a wide range of medical conditions. We offer a family friendly, safe and supportive environment for children and their families.
Our services
Our comprehensive Paediatric Service has been designed with children and families in mind.
Children’s Ward (inpatient services)
- 14 bed Paediatric Medical ward
- paediatric surgical and orthopaedic services
- sleeping facilities for parents and carers (only one parent or carer can stay overnight with their child)
- age appropriate furniture, decor and play areas
- parent’s lounge with kitchenette
- mother crafting support service for families
Children’s specialist outpatient clinics
- Paediatrics
- Allied Health (speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics and psychology)
- Paediatric Surgery
- Paediatric diabetic clinic (North Lakes Health Precinct)
- Orthopaedic and fracture clinic
- Neonatal nurse practitioner clinic
Children’s emergency services
If your child suddenly becomes ill or has been seriously injured and needs urgent care, please take your child to our Emergency Department at Redcliffe Hospital.
How to access this service
Children’s Ward
There are three ways your child can access inpatient services:
- internally through the Redcliffe Hospital Emergency Department or Specialist Outpatient Department
- planned admission for:
- investigation of an undiagnosed condition
- routine medical treatment
- surgical and dental procedures
- an inter-hospital transfer.
Children’s Specialist Outpatient Clinics
Your child will need a referral letter from your GP or medical practitioner to access this service. Your doctor should send this directly to the hospital.
Once we receive the referral, we will send you a confirmation letter. You will then receive an appointment booking letter with your child’s appointment date. Please note, your child will be allocated a category on the children’s outpatient wait list, based on the information provided in the GP’s referral letter.

What to bring
- Your child’s Medicare card
- Private health insurance card (if you want to use it)
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Current medications your child is taking (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
- Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
- Glasses, hearing and mobility aids
- Your child’s appointment letter
- Any special items listed on your child’s letter
- Any documents from school or previous GP or specialist appointments
- Your baby’s Red Book (Personal Child Health Record)
- Snacks, a drink or money to buy refreshments
- Something to read or do while you wait
- Your child’s pyjamas, socks or comfortable day clothes and shoes
- Toiletries (nappies, toothpaste, toothbrush)
- A comfort item like a toy or blanket
- Books or favourite activity
- Your clothes and toiletries if you are staying overnight with your child
- Slippers and shoes (low heel, closed-in, non-slip, adjustable and firm fitting around the foot)
- Something to read or do during your stay
- Medical devices required for your child’s care (e.g. CPAP machine)
- Do not bring large amounts of cash or valuables such as jewellery, watches or other items of value to you

Education and training
We are proud to have a long tradition of educating and training the next generation of nurses, medical registrars and specialists in paediatric medicine in Queensland. As part of a major teaching hospital, we run postgraduate programs and have close links with local universities. You may encounter medical, nursing and allied health students when you access services at Redcliffe Hospital.

Visiting hours for parents or carers are 24 hours, 7 days a week, however only one parent or carer can stay overnight.
