Metro North welcomes new interns

The New Year has seen 164 new junior doctors commence careers as interns at hospitals across Metro North.

Metro North Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Ken Whelan said this was an exciting time of year when new doctors commenced their training and gained an opportunity to learn from some of the best clinicians in Australia.

The new interns will be placed at our major hospitals including The Prince Charles, Royal Brisbane and Women’s, Caboolture and Redcliffe Hospitals, Mr Whelan said.

Initially, the interns will complete orientation week between 11 and 15 January to familiarise themselves with each hospital, its services and clinical practice and procedures.

Following the week-long intensive orientation program, interns will embark on a range of rotations, which may include medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and additional elective terms in other specialised areas.

Of the 158 interns, 17 will be placed at Caboolture Hospital, 27 at Redcliffe Hospital, 95 at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and 25 at The Prince Charles Hospital.

This is an increase of eight new internships from last year, Mr Whelan said.

The 164 interns are part of a larger group of 739 new doctors who are taking up positions at hospitals across the state.

Internships across Metro North facilities are always highly sought after, and successful interns have graduated from universities across Queensland and other states.

Their preference for Metro North facilities highlights the national and international standard of our training institutions and research facilities.

The new junior doctors will start their clinical placement on 18 January 2015.
