Medical Imaging
Our Medical Imaging Department provides an essential clinical imaging service to hospital patients and the Metro North community, with subspecialty capabilities and expertise in cardiac and thoracic imaging and intervention. The Richard Slaughter Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular MRI is internationally recognised and provides comprehensive cardiac imaging expertise for other public and private centres across the state.
The team also provides a robust general imaging service supporting the care and treatment of patients and the surgical, medical and paediatric teams at The Prince Charles Hospital.
Our services
Using state-of-the-art equipment, we offer a range of medical imaging services including:
- Heart-Lung Imaging (Cardiac and Thoracic)
- general x-rays
- computed tomography (CT scan)
- ultrasound
- nuclear medicine
- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- interventional procedures
- angiography and other interventional radiology procedures
- fluoroscopy (contrast studies).
Subspecialty imaging provided includes:
- Cardiac CT—CTCA, calcium scoring, assessment of congenital heart disease, left atrial mapping, coronary sinus mapping, valve CT fluoroscopy
- ECG gated CT—TAVI assessment, thoracic aorta
- Cardiac MRI: Function and viability, adult congenital heart disease, stress perfusion imaging, pulmonary angiography, venography, right ventricular assessment, exercise MRI, aortograms
- CT pulmonary perfusion, HRCT
- Pulmonary angiogram, embolisation and balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA).
How to access this service
You need a referral letter or form from your GP or specialist medical practitioner to access this service. Your doctor will need to send your referral to the hospital or you can bring it directly to us.

After your hospital appointment
Your doctor may advise that you require surgery. If this is the case you will be placed on a surgical waiting list and may need to attend the Pre-admission Clinic before your surgery.
What to bring
- Your Medicare card
- Private health insurance card (if you have one)
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Current medications (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
- Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
- Glasses, hearing and mobility aids
- Your appointment letter
- Any special items listed on your letter
- WorkCover claim number (if relevant)
- Snacks, a drink or money to buy refreshments
- Something to read or do while you wait

We provide specialised medical imaging services for inpatients at The Prince Charles Hospital and outpatients living in the local community and across Queensland. Our department consists of:
- 2 x 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners
- 3 multidetector CT scanners
- 1 digital fluoroscopy room
- 1 angiographic/fluoroscopy room
- 5 ultrasound machines
- 4 mobile x-ray machines
- 4 x-ray rooms
- 1 mobile x-ray machine and 3 x-ray rooms in emergency department.
