Public Health Unit

Public health services focus on addressing the range of risks and protective factors that determine the health of our community as a whole.

Public health services aim to protect health; prevent illness and injury; and promote health and wellbeing.

This function is complementary and interdependent of the role of a health system which is primarily focused on providing healthcare services to individuals and families.

  • Coordinate disease control initiatives, including response to, and notification of, disease outbreaks.
  • Undertake a range of environmental health initiatives, including monitoring compliance with and enforcing public health legislation in relation to food safety and standards, water quality standards, pest management, medicines and poisons, environmental hazards and tobacco.
  • Assess and coordinate local responses to public health risks.
  • Undertake epidemiology and health surveillance activities, including the collation, analysis, monitoring and dissemination of information on health status and disease trends.
  • Provide specialist public health advice to health services, other sectors and the community, and develop their capacity to collaboratively plan and implement effective public health programs.
  • Provide education, training and clinical support for immunisation programs, and coordinate school-based vaccination programs.
