North Lakes Cancer Care Service

Cancer Care Services at the North Lakes Health Precinct provides Haematology, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology medical consultation. Outpatient services such as chemotherapy, blood product support and therapy treatments for patients requiring low risk therapy are provided at North Lakes Cancer Care Services.

Our services

We have eight treatment beds/chairs and three consultation rooms to provide:

low risk cytotoxic therapy
blood product support
supportive therapy
medical consultations
Cancer Care Coordination
Pharmacy clinics
allied health support

How to access this service

You will need a referral letter from your GP or medical practitioner to access this service. Your doctor will need to send your referral letter to the service through the Central Patient Intake service. If you are currently a patient receiving care at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and live close by to North Lakes you can discuss if you are able to be treated at North Lakes with your treating doctor.

You will receive a confirmation letter advising you of your outpatient appointment and what to do next.

What to bring

Every time you come

Your Medicare card.
Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one).
Adverse drug alert card (if you have one).
List of Medications you are currently taking, including any that you have bought without a prescription and herbal medicine.
Relevant x-rays, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports.
Private health insurance card (if you want to use it).
Glasses, hearing aid, walking frame.

For a clinic appointment

Your appointment letter.
Any special items listed on your letter.
Your appointment book.
Workcover claim number (if relevant).
Refreshments and something to drink while you wait.

For a treatment

A responsible adult carer to stay with you to hear instructions, help you and take you home.
Advanced Healthcare Directive if you have one.

What to expect

Before your appointment

Blood tests

A blood test may be required before your appointment or treatment. You should have your blood collected on a day prior to attending the service (eg: Friday or Saturday if it is a Monday appointment). If this is not possible and you are having a blood test on the same day the blood collection needs to be done at least 3 hours before your appointment time.

Public pathology services are not available at the North Lakes Health Precinct. Public collection centres are available at:

Caboolture Hospital
Nambour Hospital
Redcliffe Hospital

Private pathology services are available within the North Lakes area however you will need to check with your doctor regarding the best option for you.

When you arrive

You may see medical staff, Cancer Care Coordinators and allied health professionals during your visit.

You will have separate appointments with your doctor for your clinic consultation and for your treatment. Your doctor or nurse will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Registration

Always register with Cancer Care Reception on the Ground Floor before any appointment or treatment. Please let us know if you have any special requirements for your visit with us.

Appointment times

Appointment times are a guide to when you will be seen by your doctor and receive treatment. We may need to attend to patients who require urgent attention, which can cause unexpected delays.
You should notify staff if you have been waiting more than 1 hour to see the doctor or receive treatment.

Feeling unwell?

If you feel unwell while you are here please let the staff know immediately. In an emergency, nursing and medical staff are available to provide treatment.

Please do not come to North Lakes Cancer Care Service if you require urgent medical attention. Go to your nearest hospital or health care provider immediately. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones are not permitted in the vicinity of medical equipment. Please switch off your mobile phone during your visit.

Meals

Light refreshments are provided for patients receiving treatment. There are also vending machines located in the North Lakes Health Precinct and cafés and food outlets within walking distance.

You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks with you.

When you leave

Pharmacy

Your doctor may prescribe medications for you to take at home.

Some chemotherapy-related medications are available from the pharmacy located inside Cancer Care Services. Other medications may need to be dispensed from a community pharmacy.

Check with your doctor or nurse if this applies to your prescription.

Your next appointment

The doctor may need to see you before each treatment. This will depend on your treatment regime and your individual requirements.

The doctor will discuss with you your plan of care and when you need to have another blood test.

Transport and parking

There is free parking for patients and visitors at the North Lakes Health Precinct. It is labelled ‘client parking’.

Public transport is available to and from the North Lakes Shopping Centre. It is a short walk to the North Lakes Health Precinct.

Buses

Buses run direct from various points including Mango Hill, Redcliffe, Kippa Ring, Kallangur and Petrie.

You will need to catch connecting buses from other areas such as Caboolture, Murrumba Downs or Bribie Island.

Trains

The nearest train station is Mango Hill train station 1.3km from the North Lakes Health Precinct. Bus route 687 travels from Mango Hill train station to North Lakes Health Precinct.

The Caboolture/Sunshine Coast Line stop at Petrie station.

Public transport will be required from Petrie Station. Bus route 680 goes from Petrie station to North Lakes Shopping Centre.

North Lakes Cancer Care Services only provides planned outpatient services. All inpatient services and emergency treatments must be referred to Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, Caboolture Hospital, Redcliffe Hospital or The Prince Charles Hospital.
