Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit

Each year more than 1,600 premature and sick newborns are admitted to the Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit (GSNU), requiring specialist care and management.

We care for babies who are born prematurely (less than 37 weeks gestation) or require diagnosis and care of surgical, genetic or breathing problems. We understand that having your baby admitted to the Neonatal Unit may be an overwhelming time for you. We are here to offer our expertise, care and ongoing support to you and your baby.

Our services

Sick babies can be admitted to the Neonatal Unit from the hospital or transferred from other hospitals across regional Queensland and northern New South Wales through our Neonatal Retrieval (NeoResq) Service.

As one of Queensland’s specialty neonatal centres, your baby will have access to advanced technology and the highest level of neonatal critical care within these two areas:

Intensive Care Nursery (ICN)

The Intensive Care Nursery cares for sick and/or premature babies who require specialist medical and nursing care and equipment.

Special Care Nursery (SCN)

The Special Care Nursery cares for babies who require specialised nursing and medical care. Babies who have been in ICN will often transfer to the Special Care Nursery until they are well enough to go home or back to their ‘home’ hospital.

Parent support

We support you, your baby and family with education programs during your baby’s stay and in preparation for going home. This includes:

  • Specialised lactation consultant service
  • Parental support and education program
  • Parent craft rooms – spend time with your baby to become familiar with breastfeeding and feeding cues with the support and guidance of staff.

How to access this service

You can only access this service through the Maternity department or if you are transferred from another hospital.
