Our Medical Imaging Department provides a specialist diagnostic imaging and radiology service, supporting the care and treatment of patients.
We are the largest department in Queensland, performing more than 145,000 procedures each year.

How to access this service
To access this service, your GP or medical practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the hospital.
If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.

Health professionals
We are a tertiary imaging service for inpatients at RBWH and outpatients living in the local community and across Queensland. We provide anaesthetic day case procedures and recovery, which counts for more than 120 patients a day.
Our department consists of:
- 2 MRI scanners
- 3 CT scanners
- 2 digital fluoroscopy rooms
- 2 angiographic/interventional rooms
- 10 ultrasound and women’s imaging rooms
- 9 x-ray rooms.
We provide:
- day procedures
- pre-admission assessment and education
- imaging advice to regional remote areas
- imaging expertise on various committees, clinics and statewide committees.
Research, education and training
Our world leading imaging research program focuses on finding new and better ways to care for our patients whilst promoting innovation in medical imaging.
The Medical Imaging Department fulfils an important role in multidisciplinary research with more than 50 active collaborative projects involving all imaging modalities. Each project has a lead radiologist who works with the clinical collaborators.
We are proud to have a long tradition of educating and training the next generation of radiologists and health professionals in Queensland.
We provide a range of educational opportunities and we are accredited to provide specialist training to successful candidates as directed by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists. There are several tutorial and teaching programs available each term to trainees encompassing all key areas including film reporting, pathology, radiodiagnosis, anatomy and applied imaging technology as well as practical guidance in reporting.
