Other rheumatology conditions
(where specialist rheumatology input is sometimes sought)
Fatigue
It is usually appropriate to diagnose and manage cases of tiredness in primary care without involving a specialist. A suggested approach to this is outlined in AFP Jul 2014 – Fatigue – A Rational Approach to Investigation.
Where this is not possible, and in the absence of specialty-specific clinical indicators, referrals would usually be best directed to a General Medical clinic. Please refer to the referral guidelines for these clinics.
Fibromyalgia
It is usually appropriate to diagnose and manage cases of fibromyalgia in primary care without involving a rheumatologist.
Referrals may only be accepted if they demonstrate these guidelines have been followed.
Osteoarthritis
It is usually appropriate to diagnose and manage cases of osteoarthritis without involving a rheumatologist.
Referrals may only be accepted if they demonstrate these guidelines have been followed.
Osteoporosis
It is usually appropriate to diagnose and manage cases of osteoporosis in primary care without involving a specialist.
Where this is not possible, referrals would usually be best directed to the Bone Clinic, a subspecialty of the Endocrinology service at RBWH. Please refer to the referral guidelines for this clinic.
