Red flags
Consider immediate referral to/liaison with specialist for
- Clinical suspicion of Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA)
Consider routine referral for
- Diagnosis unclear or atypical features
- Unsatisfactory response to corticosteroids, inability to wean dose or CI to use
Other important information for referring practitioners
Lifestyle changes
- Dietary changes and move towards healthy BMI
- Alcohol reduction and smoking cessation
- Keep active (NHMRC: moderate intensity activity for 2.5-5h/week)
Medical management
- Educate regarding condition and symptoms/dangers of GCA
- Consider cancer, infection, other auto-immune disease or drug reaction as possible underlying cause
- Initiate appropriate dose of prednisolone after investigation complete and other diagnoses excluded
- Protect bone while treating with corticosteroids
